About Our Coaches

We may be biased, but Tallyho has the best coaches in the MCSL! We employ a model of seasoned career coaches (who also both happen to be MCPS teachers!) with a group of swimmers who grew up swimming in the MCSL or on deck at Tallyho. Each coach brings both expertise in swimming technique and a passion for fun and summer league swimming. Whether teaching strokes in pre-team or honing starts for the county all-star meet, our coaches give 100 percent to the team!

Akshay Gandhi Head Coach

Hello! I've been the head coach at Tallyho since 2018. I've spent most of my life around swimming with my full time career being teaching and coaching! I teach and coach at Richard Montgomery High school. I also coach year-round with RMSC. I grew up locally swimming in MCSL and learning in MCPS. I spent 5 years after graduation teaching and coaching in the Annapolis area! For me, success is not about the wins and losses. It's about helping these young kids be the best versions of themselves in and out of the pool. LETS GO FOXES!

I am excited to be returning for my eighth season with Tallyho! I just finished my 10th season as head coach of Clarksburg High School’s swim and dive team. I am a social studies teacher at Clarksburg. I started swimming on my summer team at 5 years old and never stopped. My goal is to pass on my love for this sport to our foxes. Let’s swim fast and have a lot of fun! Go Ho!

Everett Oehler Assistant (to the) Head Coach

Hi everyone! My name is Everett Oehler, and I’m excited to be joining the Tallyho coaching staff for the 2026 season as Assistant Head Coach.
I’ve been swimming since I was six years old, starting in MCSL with the Woodley Gardens Waves. I later swam year-round with RMSC throughout middle and high school, and continued my career at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where I competed on the varsity swim team for two years before finishing my senior year with the club team.
In addition to my competitive swimming background, I’ve spent time teaching private lessons at Woodley and previously served as an Assistant Head Coach at Fallsmead. I’m a bit of a swim nerd and love diving into meet lineups, technique, and writing practices to help swimmers improve.

I’m really looking forward to bringing my energy and passion for the sport to Tallyho and helping our swimmers have a fun and successful summer!

Charlie Shanfield Assistant Coach

Hello all! My name is Charlie Shanfield, I am a rising junior at Syracuse University and this is my third summer as a Tallyho coach. I began swimming at age 5 here at Tallyho and completed it through to 18! During my time as a swimmer I participated in all aspects of being a fox, notably winning the team spirit award in 2018. I also swam competitively for just over 10 years at Nations Capital Swim Club. Over the winters I study accounting and business management as well as swim for the SU club swim team. In my free time I enjoy playing my bass guitar, as I am also passionate about music. I’m excited to coach again this summer! (Feel free to hit me up for private lessons)

Catherine Bu Junior Assistant Coach

Hi everyone! My name is Catherine Bu, and I am so excited to be a coach this summer! I recently graduated from Winston Churchill High School where I served as a swim and dive team captain for two consecutive seasons, helped organize team events and meet lineups, and ultimately led the girls team to becoming both Metros and State champions! I swim on NCAP at the Georgetown Prep site year-round, and I have been on the Tallyho Swim and Dive team since I was 5! Loving and looking forward to every summer since then, my favorite memories at Tallyho include the Friday night pasta dinners and fourth of July Firecracker relays! I'm looking forward to an exciting season!

Griffin Rosenthal Junior Assistant Coach

Hey Foxes! My name is Griffin Rosenthal. I’m a rising senior at Winston Churchill High School. Tallyho has been my summer home for as long as I can remember. I’ve been on the swim team since I was five years old, but have been participating in Tallyho events since the day I was born. I have seen all sides of being a Tallyho Fox: I’ve been a lifeguard for the past two years and have been swimming on the team for the past eleven years. In addition to swimming in the summer, I play lacrosse for Churchill, play basketball with my friends in the winter, and enjoy cooking, hanging out with my friends, and playing games. I’m also an Athletic Trainer Intern at Churchill. My favorite Tallyho memories are firecracker relays and Mankiller Fridays. I can’t wait to dive into this season!
